Barbells & Dumbbells

Barbells and dumbbells, also known as ‘free weights’ are without doubt the best option for building muscle mass. Because the weight is free and not attached to a machine, the body uses more fibres and tendons to control, and keep the weight stable, thus building a stronger foundation and core.

Free weights can be used by the beginner through to the most advanced of athlete. Weight discs can easily be added to the bar as your strength increases to promote extra muscle growth. And at the end of your workout, all can be packed away until needed again.

Dumbbells are generally used in pairs, one in each hand, and are sometimes preferred over the barbell as the wrists can be supinated at various angles to place emphasis on different areas of the muscle during the movement.

Barbells are generally used for mass building compound movements such as the Bench Press, Squat and Deadlift.

The key to any successful workout program, is to follow a routine that targets individual muscle areas safely and in a controlled manner. It is recommended that beginners learn the movements from an experienced tutor, who will be able to ensure that they are making the most of their workout without running the risk of injury.
