Variously known as ghillie kettles, storm kettles, kelly kettles or volcano kettles, these were traditionally used by fishermen in the west of Ireland and this version is still manufactured in the traditional way. The advantage of this cooking system is that you don't need to carry gas canisters or solid fuel with you. It works by burning any combustible material that may be to hand around you. First, fill the kettle up with water. The water is contained in the wall around the edge of the kettle. Then just pile in some twigs, leaves, paper, fir cones, etc into the base and light through the opening in the side. Face the opening into the wind for extra draught to help the burning process. The heat rises through the chimney in the centre of the kettle and so heats the water around it. Additional combustible material can be dropped down the chimney if required. When the water boils, you will hear the whistle contained in the spout. The kettle is then ready to be removed from the base and you can pour out your boiling water. This kit also comes with a two-part grill which fits on top of the base unit containing the burning material. There is also a saucepan and frying pan that can sit on top of the grill support.
